Clippers Game Results (Part 6: 1985 vs 2003)

(16) 1985 Los Angeles Clippers (31-51) vs. (27) 2003 Los Angeles Clippers (27-55)

This is a pretty good matchup…As a refresher, read this: First year in LA! Derek Smith had 22-5-3, Marques Johnson (who came over for Terry Cummings) had 16-6, and Norm Nixon had 17-3-9. Bill Walton actually played 67 games, averaging 10-9…he’s gone by next year.
Nobody played a full year here…Brand (19-11), and Maggette (17-5) both played in only the 60 game range. Lamar Odom (15-7-4, who leaves for Miami after the year) played less than 50 games. Andre Miller though played 80 and had 14-4-7.” Looks like a pretty good matchup from that. Then add in the fact that Game One was a game for the ages (kind of).

Game 1

1985 has a semi-comfortable lead (7) at the beginning of the 4th. After 2 2s and a 3, the score is tied. With 7 minutes left, 2003 has taken a 4 point lead. The lead extends to 7 after a one handed slam by Andre Miller with 5:11 left. It gets down to 5 before 3 free throws from Marko Jaric. With 4 minutes left, the lead get extended to 9 after a turnover and a Brand free throw. 1985 attempts a comeback. With 3:47 remaining, Marques Johnson hits a fadeaway, followed by a James Donaldson slam with 3:20 left. No one scores for two minutes, and it looks like the 5 point lead may stay. But then 1985 regains it’s range. Derek Smith hits a shot, then Michael Cage hits a runner with 1:05 left. It’s a one point game. Elton Brand hits a shot to make it three. After Marques Johnson hits a shot with 24 seconds remaining, they foul Richardson, who makes one of two. Derek Smith drills a shot, with 3 seconds left, and it’s into overtime we go!

As you know, it is 5 minute periods. One minute passes before the first score, as Marques Johnson hits a free throw. Then, at 3:20 left in OT, James Donaldson completes an and-1, so the lead is 4. After 2 of three at the line from Quentin Richardson, Marques Johnson puts 1985’s lead back to 4. Elton Brand tips in a Sean Rooks miss with 58 seconds left, but Michael Cage answers with a jumper. The lead is four. But Corey Maggette shots a three in an attempt to pull it closer….It hits the front of the rim…the backboard…and bangs in! But there was a whistle…A foul on Michael Cage! Corey hits the free throw, and it is tied at 113 with 37 seconds remaining. Derek Smith misses a shot from the paint, but the board comes down to James Donaldson with 18 seconds left. With one second left, James Donaldson’s pass is picked off by Andre Miller. Quentin Richardson can’t hit at the last second, so a second OT is needed.

2003 builds on their momentum. Maggette hits a three. Then Norm Nixon pulls it within one. Andre Miller makes one free throw to make it two. An and-1 is completed by Brand, and 2 free throws from Maggette essentially put the game away. It gets within two with 12 seconds left, but after he is fouled, Richardson hits two free throws and the game is over. Very exciting.

Game 2

With 3 minutes remaining, after a tip from Elton Brand, the 2003 Clippers lead 112-104. But 1985 battles back, a two from Nixon, another two from Nixon, then a three from Nixon makes it a 1 point game. Derek Smith puts them up off a dunk with the assist to….Nixon. To end it off, James Donaldson makes it a three point game…2003 totally lost it.

Great game again. With 5 seconds left, after a tight quarter, Derek Smith ties the game from 1985. But 2003 speeds down the court, and sinks a quick inside shot from Elton Brand to steal the series, and advance.
